  • Onion1/2, sliced
  • Spring Onions2, cut
  • Soy Sauce1 tbsp
  • Sugar1 tbsp
  • Gochugaru1 tbsp
  • Rice Cakes400 g tteok
  • Gochujang3 tbsp

Optional extras

  • Cabbage1 cup, chopped
  • Sesame Oil1 tsp
  • Sesame Seeds1 tsp

Instructions

  1. 1

Soak rice cakes in warm water 10 minutes if refrigerated-hard.

  2. 2

Simmer gochujang, gochugaru, soy, sugar and water/stock into a red sauce.

  3. 3

Add rice cakes and cabbage or onion; simmer until sauce thickens and coats.

  4. 4

Serve hot — the cakes firm as they cool.

Chef's tip

Keep the sauce bubbling gently; too hard a boil makes rice cakes split.
